3.JOHN BISHOP    2.GEORGE BISHOP    1.JOHANNES BISCHOFF

John Bishop, a son of George and Nancy Ann (Boothe) Bishop, was born

in PA in 1796 and died in Roane County WV in 1866.  He married Catherine

Elizabeth Mutter in Russell County, VA.  She had the leather bound

Mutter family bible. It was written in Low Dutch, leading some to think

she was from a Shenandoah Valley settlement, the daughter of a German or

Flemish family. John and Elizabeth (Mutter) Bishop lived most of their

married career on the Big Sandy about where Pikeville, Kentucky is now.

In 1843, along with sisters "Polly", Rachel, Sarah A., and Mrs. Moses

Hunt, John (and Elizabeth moved to Upper Harper on the Pocatalico River

in Jackson County VA (WV).  When they arrived Elizabeth was being

transported on a litter.  She died a short time after their arrival.

John Bishop's farm was sold at the Jackson County Court House in

Ripley.  He had become surety for his son-in-law, Benjamin Coon, (deputy

sheriff of Jackson County), and Ben having been found guilty of

misconduct, was assessed large damages.  The farm was sold to pay the

damages. John Bishop took a second wife, Susan Ott, whom he married at

Ripley, WV. They moved to Minersville, Ohio (above Pomeroy) taking his

younger two boys and two  daughters. The Bishop family handed down

from one generation to another a special knowledge of metal working,

such as excellency of tempering tool steel, alloying, welding and

chasing (grooving, slotting, or embossing).  This knowledge, which if

properly commercialized would have netted a fortune; however, these

skills were stolen or sold for practically nothing.     When the

Huffmans or McGrews of Parkersburg and Elizabeth mill fame, invented

the band-saw about the year 1868, the great ribbon of steel would,

upon striking a hard knot,  break or sever itself where it had been

joined.  These inventors had heard of John Bishop's skill in metals

and came to Long Bottom, Ohio, where he (John Bishop II) then had a

barrel factory, and persuaded him to go with them to their mill and

join or weld their refractory band saw.  He did this and handed them

the formula for the mere recompense of twenty dollars. In the meantime

Pittsburgh men who had visited John Bishop II and admired the bits,

planes, and edged tools of his factory (all of which he had made and

tempered with his own hand). They obtained and carried away to their

steel works at Pittsburgh all that John Bishop knew about working of

steel; not having paid a ent for the knowledge.  His notions of the

"cavalier bountiful" overrode the more practical. Both John and Susan

died during the cholera epidemic of 1866-68.
