John Dawson was born about 1548 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England. He married Margaret Thompson June 7, 1753 Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.

      He married Helen Addyson March 1582/83 in Yorkshire. Helen wasw born about 1544.

Thomas Dawson, a son of John and Margaret (Thompson) Dawson, was born June 5, 1580 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England and died there in 1620. He married Elizabeth Burrell August 17, 1602 in Yorkshire. She was born July 18, 1574 in Cottingham, Yorkshire.

17.JOHN DAWSON     3.THOMAS DAWSON  1.JOHN DAWSON

 

John Dawson, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Burrell) Dawson, was born in England about 1645 and died about 1712 in MD. He married Rebecca Doyne. Rebecca was born about 1650.  “Colonial Families of USA” by MacKenzie, Vol. lV, pp 115/120, states that “John Dawson came to Maryland from Yorkshire, England prior to 1700. Grant of two manors of Land, one near Port Tobacco on the Potomac and the other was in Prince George Co. (now Montgomery County) in Maryland near the town of Dawsonville. His wife Rebecca Doyne was a daughter of a Irish Gentleman who had a grant on Chickamaxon Creek in Charles County, Md.”

Another Source from " History of Fayette & Greene Counties, Pa." page 595: “John came to the American Colonies prior to the Revolution sailing from Whitehaven, England.”

Nicholas Dawson, a son of John and Rebecca (Doyne) Dawson, was born about 1683 in MD and died about 1728 in Prince George’s County MD. He married Mary Doyne about 1684. Mary was born about 1650.

Note: Nicholas and Mary are buried on the home plantation about 6 miles south of Washington DC. Nicholas was Episcopalian by religion and Mary was Roman Catholic.

William Dawson, a son of Nicholas and Mary (Doyne) Dawson, was born about 1711 in a part of Prince George’s County, MD that was later known as Montgomery County MD. He died in 1756 in Prince George’s County. He married Elizabeth Marbury. Elizabeth was born in Price George’s County in 1714.

Note: William Dawson owned several Plantations in the Province,  according to Rent Rolls of Lord Baltimore. Some of this land was inherited from his brother's estate who left no will but was an inventory of his estate and bond dated Oct. 14, 1756 by John Dawson, John Harris Jr. and Andrew Hilton. Witnesses were Luke Marbury who was William's brother in law and Peter Dent.

James Dawson, a son of William and Elizabeth (Marbury) Dawson, was born in 1754 in Prince George’s County MD and died before February 19, 1820 in Allegany County MD . He married Nancy O’Dell.

Note: James grew up in Prince George’s County Md. He  moved to Allegany County MD in 1769. James and his brother William bought land from James Dawson Sr., known as “Clover Bottom” or “Hawkins Clover Bottom” in 1801. The land lay on the North Branch of the Potomac River.

James's Will was probated February 19, 1820 and December 10, 1822.

Executors were Thomas Dawson (of William) and John Dawson.  Witnesses were William Dawson Sr., Edward Dawson and Thomas Dawson. All his children were named in the will. Source Barbara Linaburg.

    Edward Dawson, a son of James and Nancy (O'Dell) Dawson, was born in MD about 17860. He married Elizabeth Addison. Elizabeth was a daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Stephenson) Addison.

Elizabeth Dawson, a daughter of James and Anne (O’Dell) Dawson, was born in 1800 in VA and died in 1866 in Dawson MD. Elizabeth married Charles Patterson in Allegany County MD February 17, 1817. She married James Frank Ravenscroft Jr. in Hampshire County VA February 4, 1827.  James, a son of James Frank and Charlotte (Dowden) Ravenscroft, was born in 1799 in VA and died in 1865 in Dawson, MD.
