1.DANIEL SHIMER

Daniel Shimer was born in the Palatine area of the Rhine Valley. He

sailed from Rotterdam aboard the "Edinburg" in 1749 and land at

Philadelphia, PA in company with his brothers, Michael and Frederick.

Daniel was naturalized in Philadelphia September 15, 1749. The ship

register carried them under the name spelling "Scheimer."  The record of

the immigration of the three brothers is recorded on page 287,

Pennsylvania  Archives, 2nd series, Volume 17.

Daniel Shimer left his two brothers in the Philadelphia area and

settled in the frontier community of Frederick in the Colony of

Maryland. He was a blacksmith. The year before he had left the

Palatinate, the proprietor of the Maryland Colony, Lord Baltimore, had

advertised in that province for immigrants to come to Maryland.

James Shimer, the second son of Daniel Shimer, was born about 1760

in either Maryland or  Pennsylvania.  In 1778, he enlisted in First

Company, Fifth Battalion,  Northampton County PA Rangers under Captain

Jacob DeWit. Northampton County, at the time of the American Revolution,

included the frontier section of Pennsylvania north of Reading and

Harrisburg. He served as a ranger until 1783 when he was discharged.  He

received "depreciation pay" for his service and the cancelled

certificate is on file in the Division of Public Records, State Library

at Harrisburg.

James Shimer married Elizabeth Jones about 1785 and moved to the

"frontier section" of Maryland, Allegany County.  Eight children born to

this union grew to adulthood.

16.GEORGE WASHINGTON SHIMER     14.WILLIAM SHIMER    3.JAMES SHIMER

1.DANIEL SHIMER

George Washington Shimer, a son of William and Rachel Christina

(Moore) Shimer, was born at Barton, MD April 5, 1832 and died in

Calhoun County WV October 3, 1911.  He married Rebecca C. Poladn

at Barton December 9, 1858.  Rebecca, a daughter of Aaron and Catherine (Miller-Shimer) Poland, was born in Allegheny County MD February 21, 1840 and died in Calhoun County June 6, 1933.

In later life, George often spoke with pride of the fact he voted

for Abraham Lincoln before he left Maryland for Calhoun County.  He

opposed slave labor and deplored the fact that VA had chosen to leave

the United States and join the Confederacy.  He very much applauded the

efforts to set aside the western counties into a new state of West

Virginia. On November 10, 1861, George Shimer went to Smithville and

enlisted in Company C, 11th W. Va. Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  On

December 22, he went to Elizabeth and was mustered in as a Private under

the regimental commander, Colonel John K. Rathbone.

Records of his enlistment show that George was 5' 9" tall, was of

dark complexion, had blue eyes and dark hair, and was a blacksmith by

trade.  During the war, he served under Gen. B. F. Kelley in the

Railroad Department. He was discharged on December 24, 1864 at

Cumberland, Maryland, as a Sergeant.

During most of his military, George was within one or two days

walking distance from his home.  He frequently came home on leave.  He

was greatly concerned about the welfare of his family on the farm at

White Pine.  The two women and the two sisters approaching adulthood did

all the farm work.  A group of Confederate bushwackers came through and

took their horse and drove off other livestock.

When George came home the day after Christmas, 1864, he found the

family intact and a new son had arrived.  Elbridge Ellsworth Shimer ws

born into the household on July 16, 1864.

During the next twenty-five years, George Shimer lived on his farm

at White Pine, farming and doing blacksmithing for his neighbors.

While living in White Pine, George Shimer, his wife Rebecca, and

his mother Rachel, were leaders in establishing a "class" whose members

were the charter members of the Cherry Fork United Brethren Church.

Until he died in 1911, George Shimer was active in the United Brethren

faith.  As a "class leader" and lay minister, he also helped start the

congregation that built Hoy Chapel United Brethren Church on Leading

Creek in Calhoun County.

George Shimer in 1890 relocated to Leading Creek.  He bought a farm

and established a general store at the junction of Coal Fork and Leading

Creek.

    George's Military discharge follows:
