1.THOMAS SPRIGG

Thomas Sprigg was born in Kettering, Northamtonshire, England about

1630 and died in Calvert County MD in 1704. By March 1651, he was

living in Northampton County VA and had married a widow, Catherine

(Graves) Roper. The couple patented land in Calvert County by 1656 and

were living there. Catherine died and Thomas married Eleanor Nuthall by

July 1668.

James Sprigg, a son of Edward and Elizabeth (Pile) Sprigg, was born

in MD January 27, 1725 and died there in 1778. He married Elizabeth

-----. After James' death, Elizabeth moved to Harrison County VA and

was listed there in the 1786 VA census. She was assigned 500 acres of

land in the county by virtue of a Treasury warrant dated 1783.

1766 and died about 1832. He married Elizabeth Wyville in Frederick

County MD December 12, 1795.

Edward Gruber Sprigg, a son of John and Elizabeth (Wyville) Sprigg,

was born in Montgomery County MD January 10, 1808 and died in Braxton

County WV December 12, 1880. He married Martha Jane Smith in Lewis

County VA December 29, 1831. Martha was born in MD about 1813 and died

in Braxton County February 1, 1892. The family moved from Jacksonville,

Lewis County VA to the vicinity of Sutton, Braxton County VA about 1845.

James Darnell Sprigg, a son of Edward Gruber and Martha Jane (Smith)

Sprigg, was born in Lewis County VA January 3, 1840 and died in Braxton

County WV January 6, 1918. He married Sarah Jane McCoy January 8, 1876.

Sarah, a daughter of William H. and Elizabeth Estep (Squires) McCoy, was

born in VA about 1847 and died in Lewis County WV August 18, 1937.

James served the Confederacy in the Civil War as a second Lieutenant

in the 19th VA Cavalry.

WV December 15, 1897. Catherine, a daughter of James Frank and Sarah

Catherine (Bailey) Cummings, was born in Lewis County March 4, 1874 and

died in Braxton County in 1955.
