1.FREDERICK STEINBECK

 

    Frederick Steinbeck was born in Prussia about 1775. He married Sarah

"Sally" Eckhart. The family came to America about 1800, in company with

Frederick's brother Daniel F. Steinbeck, who was born in Prussia about

1777 and died in Bedford County PA in 1825.

2.HENRY STEINBECK    1.FREDERICK STEINBECK

 

    Henry Steinbeck, a son of Frederick and Sarah (Eckhart) Steinbeck,

was born in Hardy County VA February 4, 1801 and died in Roane County WV

September 4, 1881. He married Julia Ann Capito. Julia, a daughter of

Daniel D. and Nancy (Herderberg) Capito, was born in VA October 26 1808

and died in Lewis County WV October 29, 1889.

    The couple came to Lewis County VA sometime around 1830. Henry was

appointed a Justice of the Peace in 146 and waqs electedf to the office

in 1856 and 1860.

        Elizabeth Anne "Betsy Ann" Steinbeck, a daughter of Frederick

and Sarah (Eckhart) Steinbeck was born in Hampshire County VA about

1809. She married Aaron Clarke in Hardy County VA VA July 21, 1825.

Aaron, a son of John and Elizabeth (Welton) Clarke, was born in VA about

1808 and died in November 18, 1869.

6.SARAH ANN STEINBECK   2.HENRY STEINBECK    1.FREDERICK STEINBECK

 

    Sarah Ann Steinbeck, a daughter of Henry D. and Julia Ann (Capito)

Steinbeck, was born in VA in 1828 and died in TX about 1868. She married

Enoch Thornton Withers in Lewis County VA November 12, 1846. Enoch, a

son of Alexander Scott and Melinda (Fisher) Withers, was born in 1822

and died in Forest County TX in 1865.

    Their first two children were born in Lewis County VA (WV). The

others were born in Forest County TX. All but three of the children kids

died of fever along with Sarah and Enoch. The surviving children were

moved back to WV. In the 1870 Lewis County WV census, 13 year old Howard

Alfred Withers and 10 year old Enoch Scott Withers were listed in the

household of their maternal grand father, Henry D. Steinbeck.

    Daniel F. Steinbeck, a son of Henry D. and Julia Ann (Capito)

Steinbeck, was born in December 1831 and died in Atlantic City, NJ

August 3, 1906. He married Ellenorah M. "Ellen" Gluck in Gilmer County

WV November 29, 1866. Ellen, a daughter of Christian and Anna Catherine

(Erehart) Gluck, was born October 20, 1842 and died in Wood County WV in

March 1922.

    Daniel served in the Union Militia as a Second Lieutenant in the 165

Militia Order.

    John William Steinbeck, a son of Henry D. and Julia Ann (Capito)

Steinbeck, was born in VA about 1834 and died in TX February 23, 1881.

He married Martha Ann "Mattie" (Sparks) Crane in TX in 1867. Martha, a

daughter of James Hawkins and Elizabeth (McKnight) Sparks, was born in

Nagadoches County TX March 5, 1842. She was the widow of Newell Walton

Crane, who died in the Civil War.

    John served the Confederacy in the Civil War in the Tarrant City

Rifles.

    Christian Henry Steinbeck, a son of Henry D. and Julia Ann (Capito)

Steinbeck, was born in VA about 1840 and died in Roane County WV in

1879. He married Araminta Price Ruhl in Lewis County March 30, 1865.

Araminta, a daughter of David and Sarah E. Ruhl, was born in Botetourt

County VA in 1845.

    Araminta married Henry Middleton Fetty in Roane County about 1881.

STEINBECK,

    George William Steinbeck, a son of Henry D. and Julia Ann (Capito)

Steinbeck, was born in VA may 30, 1842 and died in Lewis County WV

August 30, 1903. He married Tillie Bush in Bosqueville, TX in November

1869. Tillie was born in January 1853 and died in OH November 11, 1916.

    George served the Union in the Civil War in Co B 15th W.Va.

Volunteer Infantry from September 1862 until after October 1864. He was

wounded at Snicker's Gap in July 1864. He and Tillie moved back to Lewis

County before 1880.

    Nancy Elizabeth Steinbeck, a daughter of Henry D. and Julia Ann

(Capito) Steinbeck, was born in Lewis County VA June 25, 1845 and died

in CO September 28, 1925. She married Leonidas Frilby Law August 19,

1868 in Lewis County. Leonidas, a son of Andrew and Margaret (Waldeck)

Law, was born January 30, 1844 near Bone Creek, VA and died in CO

January 30, 1923.

    Leonidas served the Union in the Civil War in Co A 6th W.Va.

Volunteer Cavalry in 1864 and 1865.

    The family moved to CO to homestead about 1871. They returned to WV

about 1877 and located in Ritchie County. They moved to Roane County,

where Leonidas served as a Methodist minister. They retired in 1904 and

moved to Boulder, CO.

    Francis Eckert "Bub" Steinbeck, a son of Henry D. and Julia Ann

(Capito) Steinbeck, was born in Lewis County WV January 2, 1849 and died

there March 5, 1905. He married Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Ballentine in

Marion County WV March 13, 1871. Mary, a daughter of William Henry and

Elizabeth Mary (Kimberly) Ballentine, was born in Ritchie County WV in

1847 and died in Lewis County January 10, 1941.

died February 4, 1898. He married Adelaide "Addie" Skidmore in September

1897.

10, 1880 and died March 3, 1980. She married Jerry P. Wilson in Lewis

County WV in October 1907. Jerry was born in Rimersburg, PA in 1862 and

died in 1947.

    Charles Dixon "Car" Steinbeck, a son of Francis Eckert and Mary

Elizabeth (Ballentine) Steinbeck, was born in Lewis County WV February

12, 1882 and died there March 6, 1940. He married Clara Ann Rasmussen

March 15, 1908. Clara was born in 1887 and died in Alberta, Canada in

1919.

    Charles moved his family to Canada in May 1908. Clara died in

childbirth there in 1919 and Charles moved his family back to WV.
